Swiss VAT calculator: add or remove VAT

Choose the rate, enter the amount and see the net amount, VAT and total straight away. Works with the 8.1%, 2.6% and 3.8% rates in force since 2024.

How it is calculated

To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the rate: on CHF 100.- net, VAT at 8.1% is CHF 8.10 and the total CHF 108.10.

To remove VAT from a price that already includes it, divide the total by 1 plus the rate: CHF 108.10 divided by 1.081 gives CHF 100.- net, and the difference of CHF 8.10 is the VAT. Simply taking 8.1% off the total gives a figure that is too low.

Three rates have applied since 1 January 2024: 8.1% standard, 2.6% reduced (for example food, books, newspapers and medicines) and 3.8% special rate for accommodation. If you need to collect the amount, a payment link from 1pay.ch lets your customer pay with TWINT or card.

If you take payments with 1pay.ch, you set up VAT once: in the general settings you switch taxes on, choose whether prices are entered including or excluding VAT and define the rates you need, for example 8.1% and 2.6%, adding more if required. You then pick or override the rate for each product and payment link, and it also appears in the confirmation emails.
