Check an IBAN in a second

Paste the IBAN: we tell you whether it is valid, which country it is from and, for Swiss and Liechtenstein accounts, whether it is a QR-IBAN or a regular IBAN.

How it is calculated

An IBAN has two letters for the country, two check digits and the account number. The length depends on the country: in Switzerland and Liechtenstein it is 21 characters. The check digits are verified with the modulo 97 method: if a digit is wrong or two digits are swapped, the check almost always catches it.

For Swiss accounts we also look at characters 5 to 9, the bank’s IID. If they are between 30000 and 31999, it is a QR-IBAN: it is used only on QR-bills with the 27-digit QR reference. For a QR-bill ready to print there is the QR-bill generator.

Frequently asked questions

Is a valid IBAN definitely correct?

No. The check says the format and check digits are right, not who owns the account. If a supplier sends you a new IBAN, confirm it by phone as well.

What is a QR-IBAN?

A special IBAN that Swiss banks issue for QR-bills with a QR reference. You can recognise it by characters 5 to 9, between 30000 and 31999. For a normal bank transfer you use the account's IBAN, not the QR-IBAN.

Does it work with foreign IBANs?

Yes: we check the length and check digits for every country in the IBAN registry. The QR-IBAN only exists in Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Is the IBAN saved?

No. The check runs in your browser and we neither send nor store the IBAN.
