How to optimise the payments in your Swiss online shop

The right methods, a phone-friendly checkout, clear costs: seven concrete steps to lose fewer baskets in your online shop in Switzerland, with or without your own site.

Online shop checkout on a smartphone with TWINT and cards

The customer has chosen the product, reached the payment step and then closes the page. Often it is not the price: it is a slow checkout, a missing method or a charge that pops up at the last moment. Here are seven concrete steps to get more orders through to the end.

1. Offer the methods your customers use

In Switzerland, online shoppers expect at least TWINT and cards, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay for buying by phone. PostFinance Pay matters to a large part of Swiss customers. For higher amounts it helps to be able to pay in instalments or on invoice, with Klarna or TWINT instalments.

You do not need to show twenty logos, just the right ones. With 1pay.ch they are all in the same contract and included in all plans: you switch a new one on when customers ask for it. To choose, see the list of methods an SME really needs.

2. Think smartphone first

A good share of purchases starts on a phone. Big buttons, few fields, no compulsory registration. TWINT and wallets help because customers do not have to type a card number: they confirm on the phone and they are done.

3. Ask only for the data you need

Every extra field is a reason to give up. Name, e-mail, delivery address: the rest can wait. For services or digital products, an e-mail is often enough.

4. Show all the costs up front

Shipping, customs duties, surcharges: if they appear only at the last step, customers feel cheated and leave. State them on the product page or in the basket, in francs.

5. Build trust at payment

Prices in CHF, text in the customer’s language, visible contact details, a clear returns policy. A payment page with your logo and colours, rather than an anonymous one, shows customers they are still with you.

6. Choose the right integration for you

Not everyone needs a full shop.

Three ways to sell online

If you have… The solution What you need
A few products or occasional sales Payment link A phone or computer
A catalogue but no website 1pay.ch shop pages Product photos and prices
A WooCommerce shop or another platform E-commerce integration The plugin or the platform’s connection

The three levels are explained step by step in selling online made simple, with technical details on the e-commerce integration page.

7. Keep an eye on the numbers

See how many baskets reach payment and how many payments succeed, method by method. If nobody uses a method, remove it; if customers ask for one, switch it on. In your 1pay.ch account you see every transaction with the method used.

Costs in brief

On the Starter plan there is no monthly fee: just a fee when you get paid, 2.9% + CHF 0.30 for online payments. To find out how much to charge to receive the net amount you want, use the net price calculator.
